Atrophic Scars
Boxcar – These are wide, U-shaped scars that have sharp edges. They can be shallow or deep. The shallower they are, the better they respond to skin resurfacing treatments.
Ice pick – Ice pick scars are narrow, V-shaped scars that can go deep into the skin. They can look like small round or oval holes, like a chickenpox scar. These are the most difficult scars to treat because they can extend far under the surface of the skin.
Rolling – These are wide depressions that typically have rounded edges and an irregular, rolling appearance.
Hypertrophic or Raised scars
These scars are most common with chest and back acne. They stand above the surface of the surrounding skin and are caused by too much collagen during healing.
Atrophic or depressed acne scars can be treated by 4D Scar Reconstructive Surgery. Hypertrophic scars like Keloids can be treated with a combination of corticosteroid shots and laser therapy.

Why Don’t We Use CO2 Lasers for Acne Scar Removal in Singapore?
Acne scars and acne marks can undergo treatment with CO2 fractional resurfacing lasers. By gradually removing a few microns of the skin’s surface, CO2 lasers effectively treat scars. However, this resurfacing method works best on Caucasian skin and not Asian skin. Problems with dark spots and burns are expected when used on Asian skin, necessitating additional sessions.
Using this treatment on deeper scars is unsatisfactory because of the higher risk of complications and it requires a longer recovery time . As a result, we are unable to target scars that require a fully ablative resurfacing.
Deep ablative resurfacing gives a threefold effect—restoring the skin’s natural position while also releasing the tethering scar fibers and rebuilding the collagen matrix—the skin is left feeling and looking much smoother than before. However, this is not always ideal for Asian Skin.
