HIFU Downtime

What to expect, and what is not normal

HIFU heats deep tissue and spares the surface, so the visible phase is short. Tenderness can stay longer, and no duration is promised for any phase.

In Brief

HIFU downtime is usually short, because heat goes to deep tissue and the surface is spared. It can often fit around a working day. Pinkness and tenderness are normal, but numbness, weakness or welts are not. Early firmness is not the result. Results vary.

What it isA patient guide to recovery after focused ultrasound.
Typical recoveryMost people return to ordinary activity the same day.
Usually normalPinkness, warmth, tenderness along treated lines, slight jaw swelling and a small bruise.
Not normalPersistent numbness, weakness or asymmetry of facial movement, or a raised welt.
What it cannot doA short recovery says nothing about the size of the change.

What the Research Shows: HIFU Downtime

  • A 2023 systematic review of 16 studies, mostly in women, reported investigator-rated improvement in 92% at day 90; treatment was moderately painful, transient redness was common, and other adverse effects affected 2%. [1]
  • A 2025 systematic review of 45 clinical trials and cohort studies reported skin laxity improvements of 18% to 30%; its side-effect table lists mild redness in 30-50%, swelling in 10-20% and tenderness in 15-25% of patients. [2]

About This Treatment

The short answer

HIFU leaves no open wound, and most people return to ordinary activity the same day. The tissue is still responding, though. Tenderness along the treated lines can linger for a while, especially on pressure, chewing or smiling.

The timings below are general. No duration is promised for any phase, and the written aftercare you receive takes priority over this page.

HIFU downtime, phase by phase

01
Treatment day
Slight pinkness, warmth and tenderness. Ordinary activity usually continues.
02
The following days
Tenderness on pressure, chewing or smiling may persist. Slight jaw swelling, a small bruise or a patch of tingling may be noticed.
03
Weeks and months
Collagen change develops gradually. Early firmness is not the result. Review is timed for this, not booked straight away.

Returning to normal

ActivityGeneral timing
Work and ordinary activityUsually the same day
Make-upUsually once redness has calmed
ExerciseGenerally fine from the following day
Saunas and very hot showersBetter delayed until tenderness settles
Strong activesCan usually resume once the skin feels normal, as advised

Normal, and not normal

Usually normal

Pinkness, warmth, tenderness along treated lines, slight jaw swelling, a small bruise and a patch of tingling.

Not normal

Persistent numbness, weakness or asymmetry of facial movement, a raised welt or line of blisters, a burn mark, marked or one-sided swelling, and new hollowing.

Simple care during HIFU downtime

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and reapply it outdoors. Avoid chlorinated pools until any redness has gone. Postpone prolonged wide-mouth dental work if the jawline is still tender. Sleep face-up with your head slightly raised while the jawline is sore, as side-sleeping can make swelling look lopsided. Avoid facials, massage and other energy treatments over the same zones in the first week.

Why problems can happen

Unwanted effects are linked to where the heat lands. Heat near a nerve branch can affect feeling or movement. Energy delivered too superficially can leave a welt, blisters or a burn. Heat placed into thin fat can lead to hollowing. So energy and depth are set by the doctor after palpating tissue thickness zone by zone. He adjusts energy and sequence to your feedback, not to a preset. The deeper cartridge is used only where there is enough depth above bone. The thyroid, the orbital rim and the course of the marginal mandibular nerve are avoided. These steps lower the risk but do not remove it. If you notice anything in the not-normal list, please contact the clinic.

What HIFU downtime does not tell you

A short recovery says nothing about the size of the change. Remodelling develops over weeks and months, and it varies with age, skin quality, laxity and sun exposure. HIFU cannot replace lost volume, reduce a full fat pad, remove redundant skin or treat pigment. Some faces are not suited to it. Lean or volume-depleted faces, and a sag caused by volume loss, may be advised against it. See HIFU side effects for the fuller picture on who should avoid it.

Planning around your diary

Because the visible phase is short, HIFU can usually fit around a working day. If you have an event, the question to plan around is tenderness rather than appearance. Chewing discomfort may matter more than redness. Please tell the doctor about any important dates, as timing can be discussed at consultation. Sessions are decided at review, and aftercare instructions are given in writing. Fee factors are also set out in the written plan, and no prices are advertised.
