HIFU for Double Chin

For lax skin, not a full fat pad

Fullness under the chin has several causes. HIFU addresses lax skin and the platysma. It does not reduce fat or change the chin itself. Results vary.

In Brief

HIFU for double chin uses focused ultrasound on lax skin and the platysma beneath the chin. It may suit a soft area that creases on looking down, with little fat on pinch. It does not reduce a full fat pad. Results vary.

What the Research Shows: HIFU for Double Chin

  • A 2023 systematic review of 16 studies, mostly in women, reported investigator-rated improvement in 92% at day 90; treatment was moderately painful, transient redness was common, and other adverse effects affected 2%. [1]
  • A 2024 single-treatment study of 20 Asian women reported dermatologist-rated jowl and nasolabial laxity improvement at 12 and 24 weeks, no burns or scarring, and no significant change in pores or wrinkles. [2]
  • A 2009 systematic review of 11 randomised trials and 1,603 subjects reported wrinkle improvement lasting about 4 to 6 months, with blepharoptosis in 0% to 5.4% after glabellar treatment. [3]
  • A 2025 systematic review of 45 clinical trials and cohort studies reported skin laxity improvements of 18% to 30%; its side-effect table lists mild redness in 30-50%, swelling in 10-20% and tenderness in 15-25% of patients. [4]

About This Treatment

The short answer

A double chin can come from skin, fat, muscle, the submandibular gland, a short chin or head posture. HIFU is relevant only to the first of these and to part of the muscle layer. So the first job is to find the cause.

Dr Sin Yong uses the Ultraformer MPT platform under the chin. He adjusts energy line by line according to what you feel. Line counts are not a measure of treatment.

The examination looks at what gathers when you tilt your head down, how much fat sits in the pinch, whether bands stand out, and the shape of the chin. Depth then depends on the tissue present, zone by zone.

Depths under the chin

CartridgeWhere it is used
4.5 mmThe platysma and deeper envelope, only where there is enough tissue depth.
3.0 mmThe dermis.
1.5 mmThinner skin towards the jawline.

Who HIFU for double chin may suit

Soft, lax envelope

Skin that gathers or creases when the head tilts down, with little fat on pinch. This typically applies from the late thirties onwards.

After fat reduction

People whose fat has already been reduced and who are left with lax skin, once the area has settled.

What may fit better

FindingWhat may be considered
Full fat padFat-directed energy, or Time Freeze Laser LCLR®
Muscular bandsBotulinum toxin
Short chinChin projection, assessed separately
Dermal and subcutaneous laxityVF Lift, which uses monopolar radiofrequency
Heavy neck with much redundant skinReferral to a plastic surgery specialist
Firm, rounded fullness under the jaw angleSuspected gland, left untreated

What it cannot do

HIFU does not reduce a full submental fat pad. It cannot move the submandibular gland, lengthen a short chin or correct forward head posture. Vertical platysmal bands are muscular, so heat is not the right tool for them. If your fullness is mainly fat or structure, HIFU is unlikely to be advised. In a lean neck, heat can do harm rather than good, by leaving a hollow or making cords more visible.

Areas kept out of the field

Thyroid

Treatment is not placed over the thyroid.

Marginal mandibular nerve

Its course is considered when placing lines near the jaw edge.

Chin bone

Thin tissue over the bone is spared at 4.5 mm.

Risks and side effects

Nerve effects

Heat near the marginal mandibular nerve may cause temporary weakness or asymmetry at the corner of the mouth.

Hollowing

Heat placed into the fat of a lean neck may leave the area hollow, or make platysmal cords more visible.

Other effects

Bruising, jaw-edge tenderness, a small welt and altered sensation may occur, and are reviewed.

Report the same day

Marked or one-sided swelling, changes in mouth movement, or a welt that does not flatten.

Sessions, recovery and fees

The number of sessions is not fixed in advance, and any repeat is decided at review. How many HIFU sessions and HIFU downtime have more detail. Fees are set in writing after assessment. They depend on the depths and zones needed, whether HIFU is combined with other steps, and staging. Singapore's rules prevent clinics from advertising prices. An assessment may end with advice to use another approach, or no treatment. Please get in touch to arrange one.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It does not reduce a full submental fat pad. It addresses lax skin and the platysma beneath the chin.
An examination decides. Pinching the area and looking at it with the head tilted down helps to show what is there.
It may be considered, once the area has settled. The examination decides.
No. Vertical platysmal bands are muscular and are better suited to botulinum toxin.
No. A short chin is a structural question and is assessed separately for chin projection.
Please contact the clinic for review. Heat placed into the fat of a lean neck may leave a hollow.
Firm, rounded fullness there raises suspicion of the submandibular gland. It is left untreated, because HIFU cannot move the gland.
