The short answer
There is no standard course of HIFU. It works by gradual remodelling over weeks and months, so the useful question is what happened after the last treatment. A repeat is decided at review against your record photographs.
HIFU also covers many machines, which vary in transducer design, imaging and clearance, so one cannot stand in for another. A number quoted for one device or one face does not transfer to another.
How many HIFU sessions: what decides it
Early looseness along the jawline and under the chin is a different starting point from established descent with redundant skin.
Cartridge depths and line distribution are set from palpated tissue thickness over each zone.
Review is timed to collagen remodelling, which takes weeks and months.
If the problem is not one HIFU addresses, more sessions do not change that.
When one treatment can be enough
One treatment can be enough where laxity is early and the plan covered the right zones and depths. That is judged at review, not promised at the start. Nothing meaningful is visible on the day, so an early check tells you little. Change develops over weeks and months, and how long it lasts depends on age, skin quality, starting laxity, sun exposure, weight change, smoking and ongoing ageing. Neck laxity is mapped and treated zone by zone, with platysma position and skin excess assessed first. The thyroid is avoided in neck treatment.
Why repeats are not booked ahead
Timing follows your response rather than a calendar. Bringing treatments closer together is not recommended, because extra heat over thin tissue brings risk and no gain. Maintenance is also decided at review, and no duration is promised in advance. Treatments are not sold as a course or package. Each is quoted separately, after assessment. If review shows that the problem has changed, or that it was never a HIFU problem, the plan changes with it.
When more sessions will not help
| Finding | What may be considered |
|---|---|
| Compact fat | Time Freeze Laser LCLR® |
| Jowl from lost volume, or a deflated midface | Filler or biostimulators |
| Mobile tissue sitting low | Thread lift |
| Laxity in other layers | VF Lift, which uses monopolar radiofrequency |
| Heavy lower face with much redundant skin | Referred for a surgical opinion |
What it cannot do
HIFU does not stop ageing. It does not treat a fat pad, lost volume or tissue that has moved low, and redundant skin may be beyond any energy device. If the mechanism is wrong, repeated heat adds cost and risk without helping.
Who should be careful, and the risks
More heat here brings risk and no gain. Lean faces are assessed with this in mind.
Persistent altered sensation, a welt, or hollowing over a thin area.
Nerve irritation, fat loss, burns and welts are named risks. See HIFU side effects.
Fees
Each treatment is quoted in writing after assessment, and the written plan includes the fee factors. Treatments are not sold in advance, and a consultation can end with no treatment advised. See HIFU cost factors for what sets the fee. You can book a consultation to have your laxity examined and the plan explained.
