HIFU for Jowls

For early to moderate jowling only

Focused ultrasound can firm the area along the jawline in some faces. It does not move tissue back up, and it does not remove fat or skin. Results vary.

In Brief

HIFU for jowls uses focused ultrasound to firm tissue along the jawline and lower cheek. It may suit early to moderate jowling in a face with good volume and reasonable skin. It cannot move descended tissue back or remove fat or skin. Results vary.

About This Treatment

The short answer

A jowl can come from several things: loose tissue, fat, or a deflated midface above it. HIFU addresses only some of these. So the consultation decides whether HIFU is advised at all, and no treatment is a real option.

HIFU places points of heat at set depths, and the aim is to firm the direction in which the tissue slid. It is one possible step, and the order of any steps is decided at assessment.

At examination, the doctor looks at whether the cheeks are hollow, whether the jowl swings when your head turns, and how much of the fullness is fat. Those answers shape the plan. A thread lift repositions tissue mechanically, while HIFU relies on heat, so the two are not interchangeable.

Depths along the jawline

CartridgeWhere it is used
4.5 mmAt the SMAS along the jawline and lower cheek, where there is enough tissue depth.
3.0 mmIn the dermis over the same zone.
1.5 mmOver thinner skin toward the front of the jaw and the neck.

How the lines are placed

Lines run along the jawline and up the lower cheek. Energy is kept away from the course of the marginal mandibular nerve. The 4.5 mm cartridge is spared over thin tissue on the mandible, because heating bone adds nothing. Each zone is checked by palpation, and energy is adjusted as treatment proceeds. These settings are set individually.

Who HIFU for jowls may suit

Early to moderate jowling

A face with good volume and reasonable skin quality.

A stable picture

Cheeks that are not hollow, and a jowl that does not swing when the head turns.

Who should look elsewhere

FindingWhat may be considered
Heavy, mobile jowls with redundant skinPlastic surgery referral
Mobile tissue that needs repositioningThread lift
A deflated midfaceA biostimulator or filler to the midface, not into the jowl itself
Jowl fullness that is mainly compact fatTime Freeze Laser LCLR®
Laxity mainly in the dermis and subcutaneous layerVF Lift
A very lean faceLooks elsewhere, given the risk of hollowing

What it cannot do

HIFU cannot move descended tissue back into place. It cannot remove jowl fat or skin, and it cannot restore volume in the midface. It does not lift platysmal bands, which respond to botulinum toxin rather than heat. A firmer jawline is possible in the right face, but HIFU is not a surgical lift and should not be treated as one.

Risks and side effects

Common, and settle

Jawbone tenderness, small bruising and slight swelling along the jaw.

Nerve irritation

Marginal mandibular nerve irritation can cause temporary weakness at the corner of the mouth, an asymmetric smile, or a lower lip that does not move fully. This needs prompt review.

Hollowing

This can occur over thin cheek tissue in lean faces.

Report the same day

A welt that does not flatten, marked or one-sided swelling, persistent numbness, or any change in mouth movement.

Sessions, recovery and fees

Zone-by-zone palpation and energy adjustment reduce these risks but do not remove them. The number of sessions is not fixed in advance. See how many HIFU sessions and HIFU downtime for detail. The fee depends on the zones and depths the examination calls for, whether HIFU stands alone or is combined with another step, and how the plan is staged. Singapore's rules prevent prices from being advertised, and a written quote follows consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It can firm tissue along the jawline in suitable faces, but it does not move descended tissue back into place.
No. Where compact fat is the main issue, Time Freeze Laser LCLR® may be considered instead.
It may be. A heavy, mobile jowl with redundant skin is better assessed for surgery. The examination decides.
Filler in the jowl itself is avoided. Where deflation drives the descent, support may be restored in the midface.
Please contact the clinic promptly. Nerve irritation can cause temporary weakness at the corner of the mouth, and this needs review.
It can, over thin cheek tissue in lean faces. This is one reason very lean faces look elsewhere.
Yes. The consultation decides whether HIFU is advised at all, and the option of no treatment is always open.
