Microliposuction vs Time Freeze Laser LCLR®

The same zones, a different method, different limits

Microliposuction is surgery that suctions fat. Time Freeze Laser LCLR® is a surface laser that targets superficial fat and the dermis above it. How much excess there is, how deep it sits and whether it has stopped changing decide between them.

In Brief

Microliposuction is surgery that removes fat through fine cannulas, and in Singapore it falls under the liposuction rules. Time Freeze Laser LCLR® is a laser applied from the surface, directed at superficial fat and the dermis above it. Dr Sin Yong performs Time Freeze and refers large, deep, stable fat to an accredited surgeon.

At a Glance: Microliposuction vs Time Freeze

MicroliposuctionSurgery. Fat is suctioned through fine cannulas from a small area.
Time Freeze Laser LCLR®A long-pulsed 755 nm and 1064 nm laser applied from the surface. Nothing is inserted or suctioned.
FatMicroliposuction removes it in volume. Time Freeze reaches only the superficial layer.
SkinMicroliposuction does not tighten skin. Time Freeze heats the dermis in the same session.
RegulationLiposuction is limited to MOH-accredited doctors on approved premises, with a cooling-off period of at least seven days.

What the Research Shows: Microliposuction vs Time Freeze

  • A 2026 retrospective series followed 38 women who had MRI-guided microliposuction for excess forehead fat graft. The forehead contour measured flatter after surgery and satisfaction was high. All had temporary upper-eyelid swelling, and 2 of 38 had short-term nerve problems that resolved. [1]
  • One study of a 1,060 nm laser, which is a different device, reached and held 42 to 47 °C in subcutaneous fat with surface cooling, on the abdomen and flanks. [2] A study of 49 people using a 1,060 nm diode laser measured a mean fall of 2.6 mm in fat thickness on the treated flank, with mild to moderate tenderness that resolved in 1 to 3 weeks. [3] Neither studied the face, and their results do not apply to Time Freeze.
  • No published trial has tested Time Freeze Laser LCLR® as a named protocol. We found no published head-to-head comparison of microliposuction and a surface laser, and no published study of an external long-pulsed 1064 nm laser reducing facial or submental fat.

Figures describe published study groups, which may have used other devices or protocols. They do not predict your result. Updated 6 November 2026.

About This Comparison

Why patients ask about both

Patients often ask for microliposuction when the chin, jowl or jawline looks heavy. Dr Sin Yong uses Time Freeze for many of the same zones, so the two are easily confused. They are different things. One is a surgical procedure. The other is a laser applied from the surface.

He treats the question as one of quantity and depth, not of preference. The first thing he wants to know is how much excess there is, how deep it sits, and whether it has stopped changing.

Surgeons describe microliposuction for the chin, neck and jowls, and for revising areas where too much fat was grafted. It is a real option for the right problem, and this page is not an argument against it.

What decides between them

How much. A small, superficial excess may suit a surface laser. A large volume may need removal.

How deep. A laser from the surface reaches the superficial fat. Fat under the platysma, or a thick pad, is out of its reach.

How stable. Fat that is still changing with weight is a moving target. A stable weight comes first with either route.

How the skin behaves. If skin has lost its spring, removing fat can leave it looking looser. This is where the dermal heating of Time Freeze may be considered, and where a surgical opinion on the skin itself may be the honest one.

Liposuction rules in Singapore

Singapore regulates liposuction closely. Clinics and day-surgery centres need approval to offer it, it must be done by a doctor accredited by the Ministry of Health, and a cooling-off period of at least seven days follows counselling. [4] The conditions cover clinics and day-surgery centres, not acute hospitals. They also set a BMI limit of 28 and limits on volume, and they cover small procedures too. Short-term visitors who come mainly for liposuction are excepted from the cooling-off period. Dr Sin Yong does not perform liposuction, and he refers to an accredited surgeon where it fits.

Laser-assisted liposuction is sometimes called micro laser lipo. A laser fibre is passed under the skin through small incisions and the fat is then suctioned out, so it counts as liposuction. Time Freeze is different. Nothing goes under the skin.

If fat and loose skin sit together

This is where Time Freeze is often considered, because it targets both in one session: the Sculpting mode on superficial fat, and heat in the dermis above it. Dr Sin Yong selects the zones at assessment and leaves lean parts alone. On the face he often pairs it with the VF Lift.

For thick fat pads on the body he considers the 4K Body Lift before any surgical discussion. Marked skin excess after large weight loss is a surgical question and is referred.

After liposuction or fat grafting

Time Freeze may be considered where loose skin sits over a thin layer of residual fat after liposuction, once the area has settled. It cannot fill a dent.

Excess grafted fat has no dissolving agent. Superficial excess may suit the Sculpting mode of Time Freeze after ultrasound mapping, and larger or deeper excess may suit microliposuction by a surgeon.

What each one cannot do

Time Freeze cannot

Remove fat as liposuction does, reach deep fat, remove skin, replace lost volume, or fill a dent.

Microliposuction cannot

Tighten skin, fill a dent beside the area treated, or avoid the risks of surgery.

Neither can

Change bone, treat a gland, or stand in for a stable weight.

Who should wait

Time Freeze

Pregnancy, freshly tanned or sunburnt skin, infected or inflamed skin, and a recent course of oral acne medication. See the Time Freeze page.

Microliposuction

A surgeon sets this. BMI, general health and medicines all matter.

Either

A weight that is still changing, or a firm, new or one-sided lump, which needs medical assessment first. A lump that is red, hot, tender or growing quickly is never lasered while active: see a doctor the same day, or go to A&E if none can see you.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Microliposuction is surgery: fat is suctioned through fine cannulas under Singapore's liposuction rules. Time Freeze Laser LCLR® is a laser applied from the surface, and nothing is inserted or suctioned. The zones can overlap, but the method, the reach and the limits differ.
No. Laser-assisted liposuction passes a laser fibre under the skin through incisions, then suctions the fat, and it is regulated as liposuction. Time Freeze is applied from the surface. It has no cannula, no incision and no anaesthesia.
Microliposuction. It takes fat out in volume, and it can reach deeper fat. Time Freeze reaches only the superficial layer it can heat from the surface. That is why large, deep, stable fat is referred to an accredited surgeon.
Microliposuction removes fat and does not tighten skin, and laxity can look worse once the fat has gone. Time Freeze heats the dermis in the same session, so laxity is targeted alongside the fat. It cannot remove loose skin, and how much changes varies.
No. He does not perform liposuction. He explains how it differs, and where the excess is large, deep and stable he says so and refers you to an accredited surgeon. In Singapore it may only be done by accredited doctors in approved facilities.
On the face and neck, it is used on superficial fat at the jowl, beside the nasolabial fold, under the chin, along the jawline and over the buccal area. On the body, it is used where laxity sits over a thin layer of fat. Lean zones are left alone.
It may be considered where loose skin sits over a thin layer of residual fat, once the area has settled. It cannot fill a dent or remove skin. Marked skin excess is referred. Dr Sin Yong examines the area before advising.
Superficial excess may suit the Sculpting mode of Time Freeze, after ultrasound mapping. Grafted fat has no dissolving agent. Larger or deeper excess may need microliposuction, which is done by a surgeon. The scan and the examination decide which route fits.
